And the Brotherhood

George Orwell's 1984

His last and arguably best novel, George Orwell's 1984 is perhaps one of the best-written and most well-known satires in literature. In the novel, the protagonist Winston Smith lives in a bleak and depressing world encompassed by a dystopian future. Winston lives in Oceania, one of the three superstates existing in this futuristic world, which is controlled by the Party. The Party, headed by a man named Big Brother, has total control over the people and life in Oceania. Although a low-ranking member of the Party, Winston is tired of being forced into such a terrible life and living under constant surveillance. Winston, afraid of the Thought Police and being alone in his motives, doubts whether or not to take action against the Party. However, exhaustion of his worthless life and anger towards the Party's countless lies soon take over Winston in his attempt to rebel against the status quo. What follows is Winston's journey through actions against the Party as he discovers the true motives and meaning behind the existence of the Party, people, and himself.
